The Commuter — Five Sketches

Five pieces drawn during morning commutes. Faces and motion.

A series of ink sketches created during my morning commute over the course of a week in January 2025. Each piece captures a moment of stillness within motion — passengers absorbed in thought, caught between destinations.

Technical details:

  • Medium: Black ink on cream paper
  • Size: A5 sketchbook
  • Time per piece: 8-12 minutes (limited by commute duration)

The constraint of drawing in motion — on a moving train, with limited time — creates a particular quality. Lines are loose, decisive. There's no time for hesitation or correction. What remains is gesture and expression.

These aren't portraits of specific people (faces are deliberately abstracted) but studies of posture, attention, and the particular inward focus of people in transit.
